SAMA Experience

SAturday october 19th & SUNDAY October 20tH
10:00am-2:00PM
@ The New York Center for Creativity and Dance | 287 E. 10th St

An epic weekend dive into SAMA, the iconic work by Andrea Miller recently performed by GALLIM in the 2024 Fall for Dance Festival at City Center.

Start the day with GALLIM Methods and then immerse yourself into the world of SAMA choreography, awakening your senses, pushing your physical range and stamina to new places, and plugging into a primal pulse of movement. SAMA is a glimpse at a tangible universe where individuals have a space to express themselves and transcend through movement.

"In the digital and information age we might be numbing our bodies as the fundamental key of being in the world and knowing it. Is this the beginning of an apocalypse of the body? There are essential, ambiguous and complex elements of our humanity that we can only be accessed through our physical experience. Forget conventional, oversimplifying or automated rules of reasoning. The body is the chance of being without reducing.” - Andrea Miller

Class

GALLIM Methods is a movement technique training which practices Andrea Miller’s movement philosophy and creative methodology through a guided conversation between the body's network of systems and the imagination. Through a combination of guided improvisation and focused exercises, the class brings nuanced attention to regions of the body, its availability for movement, range, coordination, texture, and creative expression and its experience within space, time, and music.

GALLIM Repertory is known for Miller’s exploration of the essential elements of human behavior and the alchemy of movement, performance, and collaboration. In repertory sessions participants learn award winning repertory and are immersed in an intimate rehearsal environment, receiving coaching from senior GALLIM stagers to hone personal expression, and build dynamic movement range. Repertory class provides students a glimpse into company life and how GALLIM approaches rehearsing and staging repertory works.

Donterreo Culp began his training at I-Live Center of the Arts in Kingsland, Georgia. He graduated from East Carolina University in 2019 with a BFA in Dance, concentrating in Performance and Choreography, accompanied by a minor in Business Administration. While at East Carolina, he was fortunate enough to receive the Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Award allowing him to produce an evening’s length work. After graduating, Donterreo moved to New York City where he spent the last 3 years with Nimbus Dance. During his time with the company, he performed works by Sofia Nappi, Kristen Klein, Dawn Marie Bazemore and Samuel Pot. Throughout the School of Nimbus and its outreach communities, Donterreo has been gifted the opportunities to expand his love of teaching. Additionally trained at the Trinity Laban London Conservatoire of Music and Dance, where he studied dance science and technique, Donterreo is also an alumni of Springboard Danse Montréal. There he worked closely with choreographers Kyle Abraham and Alanna Morris. His performance opportunities continue with choreographers David Ingram, Tommi Galaska, John Dixon, Jennifer Archibald, Richard Smith and many others. Donterreo is currently freelancing, in hopes to work with other artists who push the boundaries of what is possible and create works that are true and authentic.
